APRIL- 2021CONSTRUCTIONTECHREVIEW.COM6Construction is one of the biggest sectors in the world in terms of value, but maybe even bigger in terms of its impact on individual's lives. As human beings live and work in buildings, and the output of this industry surrounds people at almost all times. Hardly anyone can deny, though, that 2020 has been a year full of difficulties not only for construction but for the entire world. The Coronavirus outbreak pushed for a lot of readjustments on the way humans work and communicate with each other. Besides, business activities had to continue with limited face-to-face contact, and some processes were a bit slower or even interrupted, because of precautions. Alongside, efficient project management solutions and services can determine the winners in the market. Under such conditions, the need for looking at exactly what is happening on-site, preventing loss of time, identifying mistakes early, and delivering successful projects quicker has become significant. A single source of truth is a single source of proof. By collecting all project information in one place, project managers are able to see more and communicate better. Knowing what's happening on the field at all times is one of the main keys to regaining control over the project and avoiding time-consuming claims. Nevertheless, it is essential to remember that the success of implementing a single data source is vastly dependent on the tools businesses are using. In other words, construction-specific tools are again of paramount importance if businesses want to improve the communication between teams and deliver faster and cheaper without compromising on quality. Similarly, Artificial intelligence (AI) can notably strengthen construction project management performance, especially in the early detection of project risks so they can be reduced. AI can also make the link between change orders, RFIs, and submittals back into the design phase. Additionally, it helps reduce the number of frivolous RFIs and wasteful change orders with the ultimate goal of better project performance. At the same time, Building Information Technology (BIM) has already transformed the construction industry by changing the way design, construction, and project management is handled--and it's predicted to continue doing so as the technology becomes more sophisticated and new opportunities are created. Further, BIM has been pivotal in the digital transformation of the sector, and it's become even more widely accepted this year following lockdown protocols because of its capability to enable projects to proceed in the digital space when project members were incapable to meet in person. As BIM technology continues to advance so, too, will the industry's reliance upon it in the coming year. While no one can predict the future with certainty, people can look to history to make educated guesses.
