Optimizing AHU performance improves its performance in all environmental conditions by using the right air filters, energy recovery components, and heating and cooling components.
FREMONT, CA: An air economizer cycle in most commercial air handling units (AHU) allows the units to operate free of charge in certain outside air conditions. Modulated dampers controlling outside air and return air seek the setpoint for supply air temperature during the economizer cycle. Dehumidification is not necessary when the outside air is dry. In some cases, occupant schedule changes or envelope heat loss can reduce the cooling load of the space. High supply air temperatures allow mechanical cooling and terminal box reheating to be reduced or eliminated by using higher supply air temperatures.

Air filters: Adding filters to AHUs used in kitchens to remove grease and odors is often necessary. Extra filters may also be needed whenever potentially hazardous molecules are removed from the atmosphere in worksites that use certain harmful chemicals.

Filters work best when they are fitted securely, without air leaking through the case of the AHU or gaps in the filter frame.
Energy recovery components: Climate often affects the performance of an AHU, and temperatures outside deviate most of the year from the necessary air supply conditions. An energy recovery system (ERS) minimizes energy consumption by managing air temperature with thermal treatment, which is important to monitor and manage.
Heating and cooling components: Buildings that require a high-temperature level are unlikely to be satisfied by ERS alone. In this case, additional components for thermal treatment are required. It is common to use compact heat exchangers that incorporate fins to convert water into the air. In most buildings, the building's central heating and cooling system incorporate these systems. Coils-integrated AHU can cool or heat processed air and act as the evaporator or condenser of a refrigerant circuit.
Heaters can also heat while cooling coils can be adapted to have a dehumidifying function in addition to their original purpose.
