Construction Tech Review | Tuesday, July 14, 2020
Technology has already started entering the construction environment, and now they help better the safety of construction employees.
FREMONT, CA: In the construction industry, one of the most intimidating risks is the ones that cannot be detected easily. Besides, most of the safety programs for the contractors are a collective effort of observation to ensure the employees are operating safely, and they are aware of any dangers before an accident takes place. Technology can also provide an additional layer to the effort of keeping the employees safe by offering safety-related reports and conversations. Technology will quickly help to detect hazards in real-time across a wide range of areas of the site in comparison with the safety manager. A person will have limited power as it is not possible for a human being to inspect a large area at the same time. Moreover, it is also not necessary that every minute error will catch the eye of a supervisor.
Although for a safety leader, the more valuable platform is the one that can collect the data and structure it in such a manner that permits them to realize the trends of their project and also pre-empt incidents together.

There are several tools that pair with artificial intelligence and machine learning, along with job site cameras and videos. The program scrutinizes every area of the image data for any danger zone at a rapid rate, which is not possible for a human. The tool learns every movement of the crew and other actions related to their job and then envisage whether their working environment is safe or not.
Several contractors around the world have already started using such tools for their construction, but many are still reluctant to experiment with automated safety tools. The primary reasons for their reluctance can be their schedule and cost pressures on the project as it does not allow them to experiment with technology.
